Gege Akutami is known as an author who put a lot of effort into his series’ present timeline, the fights, and his characters. But, while it cannot be denied that the present timeline is truly great, the past of the lore of Jujutsu Kaisen is a big mystery, and we can rightfully criticize Akutami for not exploring that segment. This also brings us back to this article’s topic, as we will explore whether Sukuna and Yuji Itadori could actually be related in the series or not.

  • Article breakdown:
  • Yuji Itadori is the protagonist of Jujutsu Kaisen, while Sukuna is – alongside Kenjaku – the main antagonist of Jujutsu Kaisen.
  • The two of them were, for the majority of the series, connected via the fact that Itadori consumed Sukuna’s fingers and thus became his “cage” (not a “vessel,” as Sukuna had hoped), so the two of them constantly kept fighting for control over Yuji’s body. This ended when Sukuna possessed Megumi’s body.
  • There was an old theory on Reddit that stipulated that Sukuna and Itadori could be distant relatives, but based on what we have found out in the meantime, this seems unlikely.

How is Yuji connected to Sukuna?

Sukuna, sometimes called Ryomen Sukuna, is the King of the Curses in Jujutsu Kaisen. He is an ancient, powerful, cursed spirit who has achieved notoriety because of his enormous powers and his vile and wicked nature. Alongside Kenjaku, he can be labeled as the series’ main villain. On the other hand, Yuji Itadori is the true protagonist of Jujutsu Kaisen, a high school boy who awakens his jujutsu skills after consuming a finger of Sukuna’s, which he did to save his friends from a barrage of curses that wanted to kill them in front of him.

Now, since that moment, Yuji and Sukuna have become tied. Although he initially swallowed only one of Sukuna’s 20 fingers, it was enough to wake the powerful cursed spirit, who immediately took over Yuji’s body, thinking that he had been resurrected. But, not long after, Yuji began fighting him, and he soon regained control over his own body, which shocked not only Sukuna but also Gojo and Megumi, who were also present.

Since that moment, Yuji has been fighting for control over his body with Sukuna. As he consumed more of his fingers, Sukuna became stronger, but he never managed to gain full control over Yuji’s body, even after killing him at one point in the series (he came back to life, of course). Why? When someone consumes Sukuna’s fingers, they usually become a “vessel,” which means that Sukuna can resurrect himself in their bodies and thus take full control over them. This is an easy way out for Sukuna.

But, sometimes, a potential “vessel” is just too powerful or has a will that is too powerful, and Sukuna is not able to control that “vessel,” which means that he is actually dealing with a “cage,” as he is trapped in their body and he cannot take over them.

This is what happened with Itadori – despite what everyone thought, Itadori never became a “vessel” but rather a “cage.” This is why Sukuna kept looking for a way out and when he weakened Megumi to a certain degree – as Megumi initially also had a high potential to become a “cage” – he left Yuji and possessed Megumi’s body.

And this is, in short, the relationship between Sukuna and Itadori. Currently, it is non-existent, but we have explained how the two of them were related and how that relationship evolved. Now, we will discuss the theory that they might actually be related by blood.

Is Yuji Itadori a descendant of Sukuna?

Now, the theory we will present here is a fairly old Reddit theory that appeared three years ago. It is based on the facts known at the time, and, as you will see, it does sound somewhat meaningful, considering that – at the time – we really knew significantly less about Itadori’s background and past than we know now. The author of the theory is a Reddit user religiousn, and here is what he said:

  • Yuji’s origin is still unknown. We’ve still got no clues at all about his family, other than his grandfather, Itadori Wasuke who is already deceased. Before his grandfather pass away, his grandfather wanted to reveal information about his parents, but was cut off by him.
Here’s some theory about his parents:
1.One of his parents might be from the “Ryomen” clan
2.They might be forgotten sorcerers, and the reason why Yuji has no cursed energy is because of the Heavenly Restriction, which offered him superhuman strength
  • Megumi mentioned that 1 in a million chance Sukuna (soul) is able to incarnate, otherwise it’s just a lethal poison that would kill anyone else. BUT, Yuji might not be someone else, rather he is a descendant of Sukuna and that’s why his soul is compatible with Sukuna’s, increasing the chance of incarnation (maybe up to 100%) . Furthermore, Yuji is able to resist Sukuna’s soul even though Sukuna is known as The King of Curses, Sukuna was also surprised when Yuji is able suppress him.
  • From Chapter 10, we saw that Yuji entered his consciousness and met Sukuna’s soul (this is different from when Sukuna possesses Yuji’s physical body). The soul of Sukuna looks literally like Yuji, except Sukuna has special marks/lines on his forehead, nose, cheeks and torso. And later on in chapter 22, Mahito explained the shape of the soul and body. It is said that the soul is what shaped the body. It couldn’t be coincidence that Sukuna looks like Yuji. To add it on, during Vs. Mahito Arc, it was shown that when Mahito touched Yuji’s soul, he also touched Sukuna’s, Mahito was then pulled into Yuji’s subconscious(?) and Sukuna (soul) warned him not to touch his soul again.

These are all just theories, we will know more when either Sukuna or Yuji backstory is revealed. What do you think of their relations?

So, this is what religiousn stated on Reddit, and from the perspective of someone writing this three years ago, the theory itself makes a lot of sense. At the time, we really knew very little about Itadori’s past, and based on the evidence presented in the theory, it was a very sound set of deductions that we were dealing with in this post.

But, in the meantime, we have discovered that Itadori is related to Choso via Kenjaku, so the theory about him being related to Sukuna seemingly becomes completely unnecessary. Having the main character be a relative of both main villains would be an overkill, really. So no, even though nothing can be ruled out when Akutami is concerned, we don’t think that Itadori will turn out to be a relative of Sukuna’s, as it simply would make much sense from a narrative standpoint.
