Jujutsu Kaisen: Did Choso Almost Kill Sukuna?
Choso is a powerful character from the Jujutsu Kaisen series and is the leader of the nine Cursed Womb: Death Paintings. He is, thus, a materialized cursed object who was initially a villain in the series before switching sides after realizing the truth. During the Shibuya Incident, Choso fought Yuji Itadori, and after an epic battle, he ultimately succeeded in defeating him. Since the whole point of the battle was to avenge Choso’s brothers, he proceeded to kill Yuji. Sukuna, observing the fight, commented how Yuji lost to such a weak opponent and was ready to… die? Did Choso really almost kill Sukuna?
Choso, indeed, almost killed Sukuna in Shibuya
Okay, Choso was initially introduced as a villain in the series. He was part of Kenjaku’s group and wanted to avenge his brothers, whom Yuji and Nobara had killed. He wanted to find and kill Itadori, and he did not care what happened to Sukuna in the process, as Jogo did. So… what happened?
Choso happened to be passing by while Itadori was heading to Gojo’s place, and they ended up meeting. When Choso saw Itadori, he went on the attack. This led to one of the best fights in the Shibuya Incident Arc, as Choso displayed his blood manipulation abilities immediately. Even though Itadori could dodge most of the blood-producing attacks, Choso could still seriously hurt him.
Choso’s ability to battle at both long and short range made it look like Yuji had no chance against him because he lacked the means to get close to and hurt the formidable opponent. However, Mechamaru later reactivated and advised Yuji to retreat to the lavatory; he did this after elucidating to Yuji the nature of Choso’s abilities.
Then Yuji went to the toilet and broke it completely, filling it with water. Choso arrived, and it turned out that Mechamaru’s plan worked well because the water dissolved Choso’s blood, making him unable to use nearly all his skills. Yuji attacked Choso by using his element of surprise, and the two traded punches and kicks throughout.
Yuji succeeded in hurting his opponent, but just when he believed he had won, Choso used the last bit of blood he had managed to keep dry to seriously hurt Itadori once again. This gave Yuji the upper hand because he had defeated Itadori and was ready to murder him. Sukuna, observing the whole battle at that time, commented with disdain how Yuji lost to such a weak opponent, but he seemed to be getting ready to die. He was closing his eyes with resignation, but as Choso spared Yuji’s life, he once again opened them wide and in disbelief.
We know that Choso had a sudden moment of realization and that he left Yuji alive because he noticed that the two of them might be related, but would Sukuna really have died? Well… yes… and no. Yuji had, by that time, consumed a solid amount of Sukuna’s fingers, and had Choso killed him, these fingers would disappear forever. Sure, Sukuna could be brought back via the remaining ones, but he would be so much weaker that he would no longer be such a major threat. So yes, Sukuna would have died, but he did not, and we are now going to reveal what actually happened.
Yuji practically “saved” Sukuna’s life and allowed Akutami to continue the story
So, what happened there, in Shibuya? At that crucial moment, Choso realized that Yuji was somehow connected to him and his brothers and spared Yuji’s life. As it would turn out later, Yuji was Choso’s sibling, which resulted from Kenjaku’s background machinations. So, Sukuna was ready to die, as Choso would have killed Yuji, and that would mean that Sukuna would die alongside Itadori, as Itadori was his vessel.
But Sukuna, who closed his eyes, getting ready to sleep for a while, suddenly opened them as he realized that Choso had spared Yuji’s life. So, by having his life spared by Choso, Yuji Itadori indirectly saved Sukuna’s life. Sure, there is still the fact that many of his fingers were still present, but the solid number of fingers Yuji had swallowed would be gone for good. Even if Sukuna returned at one point, it would be a much weaker Sukuna that no one would really consider to be a major threat.
And that is what actually happened in this scene. Sukuna and Yuji survived as Choso had a sudden realization, and that is how Gege Akutami was allowed to continue his story further, as both the protagonist and the main villain survived. But, as we’ve said, Choso was very close to eliminating Sukuna as a major threat, which is why this scene definitely needed some additional clarification, and that is – actually – why we decided to write this article for your enjoyment.
