Jujutusu Kaisen: Here’s What Kenjaku Did at the End of Shibuya!
Alongside Sukuna, Kenjaku, who is currently still disguised as Pseudo-Geto even though his cover has been blown, was the main villain of Jujutsu Kaisen. Kenjaku has been present from the very beginning of the series, and in this article, we have decided to explain one pivotal moment from the series, i.e., the ending of the Shibuya Incident Arc, which started something new in the world. Kenjaku seemingly won, although there were some hindrances, and the world was faced with something new. What did Kenjaku do in Shibuya? This article will explain his whole plan, so keep reading to find out everything you need to know!
Kenjaku’s plan is pivotal in understanding what happened in Shibuya
As the title reveals, in order to properly explain what happened in Shibuya, we actually have to explain Kenjaku’s plan. Namely, everything that Kenjaku did in Shibuya was part of his larger plan, so to understand what actually happened (save for the obvious that he used Mahito’s technique and released a bunch of cursed spirits), we have to discuss Kenjaku’s plan and explain what he wanted to do, i.e., what his endgame was. So, let us begin!
In short, Kenjaku’s ability is to take over dead bodies and then use and retain their powers and abilities later. Over the centuries, he has taken over many famous and unknown people, including but not limited to Noritoshi Kamo (older), Kaori Itadori, and Suguru Geto, in whose body he was in the present timeline. Upon sealing away Gojo, he succeeds in absorbing Mahito after Yuji defeats him. He then used his Idle Transfiguration technique on a wide area to alter people so that they possess innate techniques but lack the capacity to sense and control cursed energy. He then aims to awaken humans without techniques, who have been forced to ingest cursed objects containing the essence of sorcerers with whom he has made pacts over the centuries, subsequently starting a “Culling Game” between them.
And that is what happened in Shibuya in short – he used Mahito’s technique to awaken certain powers in people, but he used his other abilities to awaken dead sorcerers (via vessels), as well as to release a large number of curses in Tokyo, all of which was a lead-in to the Culling Game, which is going to start very soon. But why did Kenjaku do all of this? He talked about optimizing cursed energy when Yuki spoke of eliminating it, but what does all of that mean? What is Kenjaku’s endgame?
Interestingly enough, it was not Kenjaku who provided us with more details about his plan, but Master Tengen, who are also going to appear very soon in the anime.
Tengen claims that in the context of the Culling Game, Kenjaku’s objective is to push every Japanese citizen to evolve, leading Tengen to “merge” with humanity, eradicating the barrier between curses and humans and therefore dispersing the evil created throughout the world. He has centuries of combat experience, a deep understanding of evil energy and the human soul, and an incredible capacity for manipulation and planning. These skills are evidenced by his ability to deftly identify the weak points of the most formidable sorcerer, persuade hundreds of sorcerers to use their regrets and desires to reincarnate in the future, organize the Culling Game, gain control of the Kamo Clan and the eminences of the world of jujutsu sorcery and convince the major countries of the world to send troops to Japan well before the Shibuya incident.
As you can see, the outlines of Kenjaku’s plan are known. However, there are still some details that need to be explained further – like what does Kenjaku plans to do with the hybrid, whether he himself plans to merge with it, what his goal is with the world’s population in general, etc. – but seeing how Yuta has decapitated Kenjaku in the Shinjuku Showdown Arc, we don’t think we’re going to see his plan become reality.
And that is, more or less, it. Kenjaku’s plan was to create a new world, a new type of being, and in order to do that, he had to alter the world as we know it. Everything he actually did was in line with this plan, and everything he did in the background was part of this plan as well. And this explains what he did in Shibuya, as well as why he did it; his plan will work for a while but will ultimately fail, seemingly, as Sukuna took the spotlight, while Kenjaku was seemingly killed.
