Does Kawaki Kill Naruto in the Manga?

The relationship between Kawaki and the Uzumaki family is a very interesting one. Kawaki was raised by Naruto as his own son, and he developed a brotherly bond with Boruto; Kawaki will later unite with Boruto to solve the mystery of the Kāma, since both of them are vessels of that seal. Yet, in Chapter 66 of the Boruto manga, Kawaki fought with Boruto and punched a hole through his chest, leaving him – as it seems – for dead. Boruto survived, but that realization enraged Kawaki so much that in Chapter 77, he vowed to kill Boruto because he is Momoshiki’s vessel. Naruto and Hinata said they would stop him, but that led to a series of strange events starting with Chapter 77. In this article, we have decided to tell you whether Kawaki actually killed Naruto in the manga or not.

As far as it is known at this moment, Kawaki did not kill Naruto and Hinata in Chapter 77 of the manga; he simply locked them in an unknown dimension so he could kill Boruto, who is a vessel for Momoshiki Ōtsutsuki. Chapter 79 also implies that Naruto is alive and that Kawaki plans to blame Boruto for his disappearance and apparent death.

The rest of this article is going to give you additional details on what happened in Chapters 77 and 79 of the Boruto manga, especially in relation to what Kawaki did to Naruto and Hinata. We now know what happened, so we can confirm that we will tell you more details about the circumstances surrounding the events that led to their sudden disappearance. We have to warn you, as the article will have numerous spoilers.

What exactly happened in Chapter 77 of the Boruto manga?

As we have said, the story we are about to tell you began in Chapter 77 of the manga, and while Chapters 78 and, especially, 79 have not provided us with many additional details, we still do know a bit more than we did back then. Let us review what happened to Naruto and Hinata in Chapter 77 of the Boruto manga.

The events from Chapter 77 are a continuation of what happened in Chapter 66 of the manga, in which Kawaki seemingly killed Boruto because Momoshiki was living inside of him; finding out that Boruto survived, Kawaki was furious and, wanting to get rid of the Ōtsutsuki, he swore to himself that he would finish his job this time.

He then decided to inform Naruto of his intentions. After telling the guards to let him go because he wants to talk to Naruto, Kawaki enters Uzumaki’s residence and surprises both Naruto and Hinata. He tells Naruto they need to talk seriously, and the Seventh Hokage agrees to talk to him. What happened next was a truly shocking turn of events and was actually an explanation of Kawaki’s behavior, although everything started quite normally, with Kawaki confessing to Naruto that he loves, respects, and will do anything in his power to protect him.

Naruto is concerned about Kawaki’s state of mind and questions where those words come from. Kawaki answers that his resolve is made and that he will do anything to protect his true father figure. The boy then adds that Naruto is too good for their world, so he will be the first to die. It doesn’t help that he is also a shinobi who lives by a code, will most likely sacrifice himself for others, and won’t survive against the Ōtsutsuki.

Naruto is, understandably, overwhelmed by Kawaki’s words, but the boy keeps talking and reveals his true plan – he will hunt every single member of Ōtsutsuki and kill them with their own powers. Hinata and Naruto notice the word “every,” which suggests that Kawaki also intends to kill their son Boruto to prevent Momoshiki from taking over his body. Hinata slaps Kawaki, but Kawaki repeats what he decided – he will complete his goal and protect Naruto, even if it means his family will hate him for the rest of their lives.

Naruto vows that he will have to go through him to kill his son, which prompts Kawaki to activate the Daikokuten and send Naruto and Hinata to another dimension. Although it was a shock, Kawaki revealed that he simply wanted to protect them without hurting them physically. The technique Kawaki used was actually Isshiki’s Daikokuten technique, and at this moment, it is not known where Naruto and Hinata were locked and how and when they could be back.

Chapter 78 focused on Sasuke’s return, so we did not receive too much additional information about Naruto and Hinata. While Chapter 79 also told us very little about their fates, it implied some facts that seem quite relevant from our perspective. Namely, Chapter 79 confirmed that Naruto’s and Hinata’s chakras vanished and that they cannot be detected anymore. This implied that they might be dead, but knowing what Kawaki said about them in Chapter 77 of the manga and what was implied in Chapter 79, we don’t think that Kawaki actually killed Naruto.

Namely, in Chapter 79 of the manga, Kawaki stated that if Momoshiki is not killed, Naruto and the whole of Konoha will disappear, which, of course, implies that Naruto is still alive at this moment.

Why would Kawaki trouble himself over Naruto’s potential future death if Naruto was already dead? This wouldn’t make much sense. On top of that, you have to consider the fact that in Chapter 79, Kawaki decided to pin Naruto’s disappearance on Boruto, confirming that he would lie that Boruto hurt his father while under Momoshiki’s influence, thus creating a somewhat better position for himself.

As you can see, this is not much new in Chapters 78 and 79, but we did get some important details that definitely imply that Naruto is still alive and that Kawaki has not killed him back in Chapter 77 of the Boruto manga. The future? We’ll just have to wait and see.
