Frieren: Linie’s Ability, Erfassen, Explained! How Was Stark Able to Defeat Her?

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is a manga and anime series currently among the most popular anime airing. It has perfectly combined Japanese fiction’s artistry with Western fiction’s tropes to create a wonderful fantasy work that is extremely popular worldwide, and for a good reason. You can understand that various characters and types of characters appear in this fantasy series, and among them is Linie, a powerful demon serving under Aura. In this article, we are going to talk about Linie’s special skill, Erfassen, as we are going to explain what it does and how it can be countered with relative ease.

Linie has the amazing ability to read mana and copy the movements

Linie is a small female demon dressed as a maid who frequently serves food and drinks to Lügner; she likes to eat apples and is often seen eating one. She is quiet around others, but she seems to have a friendly relationship with Lügner, although it is obvious that she respects his authority.

One of Linie’s principal powers is her ability to sense and read mana, which she often uses to her own advantage. This is how she was able to follow Draht when he went to kill Frieren, but also, when his mana abruptly vanished, Frieren probably killed him. She was initially going to fight Fern, but Lügner deduced that Fern would be too powerful of an opponent for her, so he left her to fight Stark, believing that she could handle him.

It was then revealed that she was born sometime before the Demon King’s downfall and that she once saw Eisen in battle. Using her mimicking skills, she could properly imitate his movements, which caused a problem for Stark, as he was Eisen’s former pupil. Namely, her major ability is called Erfassen, and with it, Linie can completely copy the moves and techniques of anyone she’s seen and observed. By seeing their mana, Linie can mimick their movements and use them herself, but her ability has a major weakness.

What is Erfassen’s weak spot?

Although Linie can perfectly copy any attack or move she has seen, which makes her incredibly dangerous, there is a major weakness to her special move, Erfassen. Namely, Linie can only copy the moves she’s seen, not their power. Sure, for someone who doesn’t know the power of the original move and for someone weak, this is a major problem, as Linie will probably still be stronger. Still, for a tougher opponent or someone who has experience with the original, this is a major turning point in a battle.

Stark was initially shocked by Linie’s ability to copy his master’s moves, but he soon noticed that she was only copying the moves and not their powers. When it came to strength, she was nowhere near Eisen’s powers, which means that Stark was capable of withstanding them.

Once he understood that, being much stronger than Linie, he had an easy job defeating her. Still, we have to say that this only applies to strong opponents of Linie’s, as she is still strong enough generally to deal with less powerful opponents despite the weakness of her move.
