Is National Treasure: Edge of History Kid-Friendly? Parents Age Guide

If you were a fan of Nicolas Cage’s National Treasure movies, rejoice because a new TV show is about to hit Disney+ named National Treasure: Edge of History. While Cage and his character won’t appear in the first season of the show, it happens in the same universe, with some characters returning. So, is National Treasure: Edge of History kid-friendly?

The National Treasure series will be kid-friendly. While the details from scene to scene are still unknown since the show is not out yet, National Treasure: Edge of History will be rated TV-PG, or PG-13, meaning that kids above the age of 12 can watch it freely. We can draw that conclusion based on the older National Treasure movies.

The movies with Nicolas Cage were quite mild, although they had some slight aggression and gun violence. Still, your tweens and teens can easily watch the films without worry, and it’s safe to assume the show will be the same. Let’s explore the details a bit further to give you peace of mind and see if National Treasure: Edge of History is kid-friendly or not.

National Treasure: Edge of History brief synopsis

To help you understand whether the Disney+ original show in question is kid-friendly or not, it’s important for you to know what it’s about in the first place. Much like the two Nic Cage-led movies, National Treasure: Edge of History will be an adventurous, action-packed mystery thriller full of cool historical facts and awesome twists.

It follows a young girl named Jess Valenzuela as the lead character, who’ll be portrayed by Lisette Olivera. Jess is a 20-year-old Dreamer who longs for adventure, so she finds one by setting off on a trip that’ll change her life.

With the big help of her friends, Valenzuela is bound to uncover many secrets from the past – historical secrets, as well as ones about her family’s past. Jess will recover long-lost Pan-American treasures from around the world, learning that her family might just be completely different than she originally thought.

We also know that the show was filmed in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, as well as in Santa Fe, New Mexico, both towns with a rich history and capitals of their respective states. Overall, the series feels as if it’ll be educational as much as it’ll be fun, just like the two National Treasure movies.

Now you know what the show will be about, the question remains – will it be absolutely kid-friendly? What’s the rating of the show going to be?

Well, the rating hasn’t been officially disclosed as of yet since the show hasn’t quite premiered yet. But, there are some educated guesses we can use to determine whether the show will be 100% kid-friendly, and if not, what age limit one ought to consider.

First of all, the show will be a Disney+ original. And, although there is some content on the platform that is much gorier or violent, we hardly ever saw a Disney+ original that’s not kid-appropriate. The ‘worst’ it can get, probably, is PG-13, meaning it’ll be appropriate for persons the age of 13 or higher.

It might be even milder, though, as the only rating certificate on IMDb that’s official for the show is the one for Singapore, which rated the show to be only PG. The ratings in Singapore are usually more strict than elsewhere, especially compared to the US, so we’re probably in for a pure, child-friendly affair with National Treasure: Edge of History.

And those aren’t the only clues we can go off on. For instance, there has been nothing to suggest the rating should be any different in the trailer for the show.

Also, if we are still uncertain, all we need to do is take a look at the National Treasure movies. Seeing that the movies and the Disney+ show are essentially happening within the same universe, it’s likely that they’ll have the same rating as well.

National Treasure (2004) is rated PG in most countries around the world, including Singapore, the United Kingdom, the US, Ireland, Canada, Australia, etc.

There’s essentially no nudity or sex in the movie – only a few non-direct references, such as talks about pregnancy or changing clothes behind closed doors.

There’s only mild violence and gore in the film. Violence, in terms of Nicolas Cage knocking a guy out or getting into shootouts that have no casualties. Gore, in terms of a couple of scenes where a skeleton and two other dead bodies are seen, but nothing is too graphic.

Even the language is quite mild, with the words ‘damn’ or ‘bloody hell’ being the worst profanities in the film. So, there’s some super mild violence and shooting guns, but one could argue that the film is easily appropriate even for younger kids, not just teenagers.

Considering that National Treasure: Edge of History will premiere on Disney+, it’ll likely have the same rating or, at most, go with PG-13.

When is National Treasure: Edge of History coming out?

National Treasure: Edge of History is coming out on December 14, 2022, exclusively on Disney+. The first two episodes of the show will come out together, and then one episode per week will drop every Wednesday for the next eight weeks.

We’ll surely be eager to follow as the plot thickens to search for Easter eggs, references, and clues to the movies, as well as to follow the new storyline to see what the showrunners came up with. I just hope they hit that same vibe to get me into those nostalgic feelings.
