One Piece: Is Zoro Gay? Does He Have a Love Interest?

We know just how popular Roronoa Zoro is, as he is one of the most important One Piece characters, and he has a devoted fandom that loves him more than fans of the series love Luffy. Of course, due to that fact, it only makes sense that fans want to know more about Zoro. This article will focus on Zoro’s private life, as we will explain whether he is gay or a member of the LGBTQ community in general and whether he has a love interest in One Piece. So, keep reading if you want to know everything there is to know about this topic.
Understanding Zoro’s personality is crucial to understanding his private life
Whenever we talk about ships and romance in anime, we start off by presenting the personality of the character or characters in question. This is a tradition here on Fiction Horizon that we will continue applying even here in this article. So, before we provide you with a proper answer to the question, let us first analyze Zoro’s personality a bit.
Zoro is naturally shy, although he regularly provides comic relief in the series. He also has a bad sense of direction, so he can become lost even on clear pathways or when someone is leading the way. Zoro is either napping or training when the crew is at sea. He and Sanji frequently argue (violently and verbally) in inappropriate settings. They have a fierce rivalry. However, they make an incredible team when they work together, which happens infrequently.
After Kuina died, Zoro became inspired to surpass her as the best swordsman in the world. Since then, Zoro has made a commitment to growing and improving to get closer to his goal. Along the way, he faces enemies, and after each battle, he considers what he may have done differently to prevail. Zoro has a specific objective, much like Luffy, but he also enjoys battling other adversaries and, if feasible, ends up causing trouble or scandal.
He is exceedingly stubborn and haughty; whenever Chopper tells him to take a rest because of his wounds following each fight, he just ignores him and carries on as usual, showing his lack of concern.
Zoro first informs Luffy that he is only accompanying him on this adventure to pursue his dream, but that has since changed, as he is now also supporting Luffy in his goal to become the new Pirate King. Throughout the entire series, he has continually shown himself to be the most devoted to Luffy. He even refers to him as the “Pirate King” after Mihawk defeats him and during the battle with Kuma.
No, Zoro is not gay – he is just focused on his goal and not on romance at the moment
Now that we have explained everything you need to know about Zoro, we can give you a proper answer, namely, due to a general lack of interest in female characters (unlike Sanji, who simps everything even remotely cute), Zoro is – by some fans – perceived as being gay, which does make sense if you look at things superficially, but not if you actually dig deeper into the issue at hand.
Namely, the likelihood of Zoro being gay is quite small, almost inexistent in that aspect. We do know that he did not take much interest in any female character, but he took even less interest in male characters, and there is absolutely nothing in the series that indicates that he could be gay; nothing Oda ever wrote in the canon suggests that and this seems like yet another situation in which fans are simply reading too much into things and would like for things to go their way, despite the reality being different.
Zoro is closely connected with many female characters, including his fellow crewmates Nami and Nico Robin and others like Perona, Hiyori, and even Tashigi. In that aspect, you can understand that Oda – as far as things stand now – never intended for Zoro to be gay. At this point, Zoro is simply focused on achieving his goal of becoming the best swordsman in the world, and when you’re so focused on that goal – alongside all the other adventures he’s having – there is no time for romance there, but that is normal in shonen works.
Romance is often hinted at but rarely realized during the main timeline. Suppose some characters end up together (like Ichigo and Orihime in Bleach, Naruto and Hinata in Naruto, Ed and Winry in Fullmetal Alchemist, etc.). In that case, this usually happens after the series is over, in the epilogue, so we assume that the same thing will also happen in One Piece.
When Oda wraps everything up, we assume that we will also find out who ended up with whom, which will also provide us with an answer to Zoro’s fate. Until then, we can assume that he is not an LGBTQ character – as nothing in the story points to him being one – and that he simply doesn’t have the time for romance right now.
