Who Lives and Dies at the End of Attack on Titan?

Hajime Isayama’s Attack on Titan is a global hit and one of those modern anime series that (re)defined the genre and made it more popular worldwide. The dystopian setting, the great fights, and the overall idea of the whole story all make Attack on Titan somewhat of a modern masterpiece. The story follows Eren Yeager, who vows to retake the world after Titan brings about the destruction of his hometown and the death of his mother. Throughout the series, numerous characters from the series have died, and the ending itself is a complete bloodbath.

In that term, Attack on Titan is among those series that have killed off the largest number of its main and supporting characters. In this article, we will talk about these deaths, i.e., we will tell you who lives and who dies in Attack on Titan, as well as what happens to those characters in the series.

Who dies at the end of Attack on Titan?

According to the official data we have, a total of 119 named main and supporting characters have died. Of course, the full death toll of Attack on Titan is much bigger because a lot of soldiers and civilians whose names we never found out have perished as well, but this is the official number we have as far as named characters are concerned (excluding, of course, Titans and mythological figures). All Races (Nations) in Attack on Titan, Ranked by Importance

As you can see, among these names are some that only hardcore Attack on Titan fans will know, but there are some notable names on this list as well. We’ll quickly review the most notable deaths in the series and tell you how they happened. The most notable death on this list is, of course, Eren’s. After the battle of Liberio, he and his half-brother, Zeke, who would himself end up being killed by Levi Ackerman during the final moments of the plot, will plan a plan to be able to obtain the power of the original. Still, Eren betrays his brother and decides to go his own way, which is to eradicate all the world’s nations to protect his native island. However, he will have his head cut off by Mikasa after exchanging a tender kiss. Following Eren’s death, the people of Ymir were freed from their curse, and the power of all the Titans disappeared forever.

Hange Zoë is the next major name on the list. After being promoted, Hange was responsible for planning extramural expeditions, managing the exploration battalion, recruiting, and all other responsibilities previously assumed by Erwin. But to save the members of the Corps who were about to come face to face with the Rumbling, Hange sacrifices herself by bequeathing Armin the direction of the Survey Corps.

As for Erwin Smith, he was an excellent leader. While he takes a deep interest in his subordinates, he never hesitates to sacrifice them for the good and prosperity of mankind, and his subordinates have proven to be more willing to obey him at the risk of their lives. He loses his right arm during Eren and Ymir’s rescue mission. Erwin developed the long-range enemy detection formation, and due to uncertainty about his future, he later appointed Squad Leader Hange to succeed him. He died while sacrificing himself to save Armin’s life, as he decided that Armin should have the life-saving serum instead of him.

Bertolt Hoover was an Eldian in the Marleyan Warriors Unit. In the year 845, he, along with Reiner and Annie, broke down Wall Maria in an attempt to find and acquire the Founding Titan for Marley. After that, he joins the Walls Army, graduates in 3rd place, and later joins the Survey Corps until his identity as the wielder of the Colossus Titan is revealed. He is often described as calm and discreet. He was devoured by Armin Arlert, who became the Colossal Titan’s next possessor.

Willy Tybur is another notable name on this list; although his appearances were few, he played an important role in the plot’s development. He was a nobleman from Eldian who lived in the Marley Empire. He is the Tybur family’s head and controls the Marley Empire from behind the scenes, though he has chosen not to meddle with the Marley Empire’s military decisions. Willy declared open war on Paradis Island during the turbulent final volumes and was devoured by the Attacking Titan, who burst through a wall behind him and ate him.

Emperor Fritz was the true ruler who ruled the Kingdom of Eldia, around 1857, years before the Battle of Liberio. When one of his slaves, Ymir, gains the power of the Titans, he uses it to expand the kingdom of Eldia and destroy its enemies. As a “reward,” he made her his concubine and had three daughters with her. Upon Ymir’s death, Emperor Fritz forced his daughters to eat their mother’s body in order to preserve her power. Upon his own death, he commanded his daughters to continue to reproduce and pass on the power of the Titans so that the people of Ymir would never die out and the kingdom of Eldia could rule the world forever with his Titans.

Queen Ymir was the very first Eldian to gain the power of the Titans. She was a slave of Emperor Fritz, who misused her power as the Founding Titan to bring power to the kingdom of Eldia and then devastate all the other nations of the world, including the Marley empire. About 13 years after gaining her power, her life ended while she tried to protect the Emperor. Her daughters, Maria, Rose, and Sina, ate her corpse at the order of their father. Her power then split to spawn what are known as the Nine Primal Titans. Upon her death, Queen Ymir was transported into the Axis interior. She continued to mold the Titans’ bodies out of the clay soil and obey her royal family descendants if they held the original Titan.

Grisha Yeager is another exceptionally important character. He was a Medic from the Liberio Internment Zone within the Marley Empire and was a former member of the Eldian resistance. He was sent on a mission by the “Owl” to infiltrate the Three Walls and take the Founding Titan from the Reiss family and was given the power of the Attacking Titan to achieve this. Grisha was taken inside the Three Walls by Keith Shardiz, and settled in the Shiganshina District.

He documented his partial biography, a chronicle of the history of the Titans, and information about the outside world in three notebooks he hid in his basement. Within the Marley Empire, he married Dina and had a son named Zeke. After being sent to Paradise Island, he remarried Carla, who gave birth to Eren. He also adopted Mikasa in the year 844. He ultimately passed down his powers to Eren, who would devour him and kill him immediately after transforming for the first time.

Who lives at the end of Attack on Titan?

As far as the survivors are concerned, they are the remaining characters. We won’t really tell you much here, as these characters simply did not die, either through sheer luck or through the use of their skills, but these guys managed to survive until the end. Some of them are still alive in the epilogue, albeit much older, while others have passed away in the meantime.

Suppose you thought that these were less important characters. In that case, there are some really big names on this list, including but not limited to Armin Arlert, Mikasa Ackerman, Annie Leonhart, Falco Grice, Jean Kirstein, Reiner Braun, Connie Springer, Gabi Braun, Pieck Finger, Levi Ackerman, Karina Braun, Historia Reiss, Kiyomi Azumabito, and Onyankopon. As said, we won’t be going through their individual stories, as that wouldn’t make much sense.
