As a game, Minecraft allows you to do almost anything you can think of. It’s made to be a game where you create your own stories and your own worlds. What would happen if you wanted the Ender Dragon to spawn in the Overworld instead of the End? Could you somehow pull it off? How do you spawn the Ender Dragon in the Overworld?

  • Article Breakdown:
  • In legitimate survival mode, there is no way to spawn the Ender Dragon in the Overworld.
  • The only way to spawn the dragon in survival is to use cheats which can be troublesome if you already have a world that is set as a no-cheats world.
  • To spawn it, you’ll need to use the /summon command in survival or creative mode.

How does respawning the Ender dragon work in the End

Under normal circumstances, respawning the Ender Dragon in the End is straightforward but will take some time because you need to gather all the materials to make it happen. You’ll need one eye of ender, which can be made on the crafting table by combining blaze powder with ender pearls. Blazes drop blaze rods in the Nether. Once you get the rods, you can make blaze powder.

Ghast tears, as the name suggests, come from ghasts. You must kill the ghasts even to get a chance of it dropping a tear. They’ll usually drop 0-1 tear, but the number can increase with the Looting enchantment. You’ll then also place seven pieces of glass which will yield one end crystal, but you need four.

The crystals need to be placed on the End fountain, which will resummon the dragon. The fountain is made out of bedrock so does this insinuate that all you need is some bedrock to summon the Ender Dragon in the Overworld?

We can’t know for sure, but even if it were true, you can’t mine bedrock in Survival Minecraft, so you can’t obtain it as an item and place it wherever you want. You could dig down to bedrock levels and try to resummon the dragon there, but I’ll tell you right now that it won’t work since I’ve tested it out.

Is it possible to spawn the Ender Dragon without using cheats?

So to conclude, there’s no way to spawn the Ender Dragon in the Overworld without using cheats. It used to be a thing, but that only happened in Minecraft Pocket Edition because of a bug where the exit portal would spawn before the dragon was killed, so it would end up in the Overworld by accident.

But if you don’t consider mods cheating, then yes, you can spawn the Ender Dragon in the Overworld without using cheats. One such mod is the Dragon Mounts: Legacy mod that doesn’t exactly let you spawn a dragon in the Overworld but does so as a consequence.

In Minecraft, the dragon egg that spawns only when you first kill the Ender Dragon is useless and can only be used as a sort of trophy. This mod changes things and lets you hatch the dragon. The dragon will then be your companion, and you can even ride it, Overworld included.

How to spawn the Ender Dragon with cheats

You’ll need to use the summon command to spawn the Ender Dragon in the Overworld. Open up your command windows and type in /summon minecraft:ender_dragon. This will spawn the dragon in the Overworld. If you want to do this in a world where you don’t have cheats enabled, you can make this happen in several ways.

You can either go to Settings and click on Open to LAN. This will allow you to change the world settings and enable your survival world with cheats. Don’t worry; no players will be able to join the world unless they are connected to your network. You’ll have to repeat this every time you enter the world again if you want to keep the world with cheats.

You can change server properties if you are the server owner to enable cheats on servers. If not, you have no choice but to ask the server owner to allow cheats. Otherwise, it’s not possible if you’re just a player.

Ender Dragon behavior in the Overworld

When you summon the dragon in the Overworld using the summon command, you might be disappointed when you discover that the dragon doesn’t actually attack you. It’ll spin endlessly in circles and destroy all blocks that are present (the exceptions are obsidian and bedrock). There is a way to change this, but this would require you to change the setting called DragonPhase in your .minecraft files.

The first thing is that the dragon summoned with the command will always focus on the 0,0 spawn point and won’t leave it, which is bad news for you if you want to do anything other than look at the dragon in the Overworld. As far as I can tell, there are no mods to make it so that the Ender Dragon behaves differently in the Overworld.

You can use dragon mods that introduce various species of dragons in the Overworld. You can fight them, make them familiar, and so much more.

The most complicated way to get the Ender Dragon into the Overworld without cheats

This method uses a glitch in 1.19 that lets the dragon freeze when you break all of the ender crystals but not the last one. Then, when the dragon perches in the end fountain, you break the last crystal, and the dragon freezes. Then it’s a matter of doing a lot of redstoning to actually move the dragon to the end gate, then back to the fountain…all in all, it’s a tedious and long process but quite impressive if you have the patience to pull it off.

You can check out the video below with detailed instructions if you want the full tutorial on how to do it. This is the only way to move the dragon into the Overworld without cheats. It’ll still act as if you’ve summoned it when you do this.
