One Piece is an anime that certainly has its fair share of strong and powerful characters. And while its protagonist, Monkey D. Luffy, is certainly among them, some characters might be even more powerful than the cheerful and quirky protagonist of the manga. In this article, we are going to compare two such characters, as we are going to pit Kaido against Momonosuke, a character that – in a way – looks strikingly similar to Kaido, to see who the stronger of the two is. Also, you’re going to find out whether Kaido and Momonosuke have the same Devil Fruit.

Kaido is the more powerful fighter of the two, and he could defeat Momonosuke in a direct clash. Kaido is stronger. He knows more Haki techniques and has more experience with his Devil Fruit. Even the fact that Momonosuke is a better swordsman than Kaido wouldn’t help him in this battle.

The rest of this article will further elaborate on the above-given answer as we will compare Momonosuke and Kaido in more detail. Through several categories, you will see who the stronger of the two is and why our answer is like it is, i.e., why Kaido would, according to our analysis, be able to defeat Momonosuke in the end.

Physical powers

Momonosuke, the leader of the Kozuki family, is the head of all of its members, including Inuarashi and Nekomamushi, the chieftains of the Mink Tribe. He is also one of the leaders of the Ninja-Pirate-Mink-Samurai Alliance, which makes him incredibly influential within that organization. Momonosuke controls the Wano warriors of the alliance because he is their leader. Additionally, the majority of the Udon inmates joined the alliance as a result of his presence.

Being young, he uses this power sparingly and leaves most of the decision-making process to his devoted retainer Kin’emon. Momonosuke managed to withstand a severe beating from Kanjuro, which startled the samurai, who attributed this phenomenon to the fact that Momonusuke was actually Oden’s son, despite the fact that he had not shown the superhuman power that his father possessed when he was a boy. This was further shown when Momonosuke reached adulthood; he appears to have inherited his father’s endurance and tenacity because he felt absolutely nothing after being hit by both Nami and Hiyori.

Luffy vs. Kaido 2

Due to his muscle mass, Kaido has enormous physical strength. He managed to capsize nine giant prison ships. Kaido is powerful enough that his single scream caused visible damage to the area around him. One of Kaido’s main strengths is his inability to die; indeed, he suffered seven defeats, was captured by the Navy or enemies eighteen times, was tortured over a thousand times, and finally, was sentenced to death forty times. However, no execution, whatever it was, worked.

In addition, Kaido jumped 10,000 meters to the ground, sending a powerful shockwave that could have sunk a nearby ship, but he just suffered from a headache; suicide has become a pastime for him. Like Shanks and Edward Newgate, Kaido and Big Mom were able to break the sky in half with one strike, demonstrating that they were equally as powerful as Charlotte Linlin. Big Mom is yet to be overcome, which is a strong indication of Kaido’s strength.

There is absolutely no doubt that Kaido is physically stronger than Momonosuke. Kaido’s physical powers are truly impressive, and there is only a handful of characters that can match the Yonko in this category.

Devil Fruit

Momonosuke ate an Artificial Devil Fruit created by Vegapunk, which Vegapunk deemed a failure. It’s a Zoan-type fruit that turns him into a serpentine dragon and appears to give him the power to fly by creating clouds he can cling to. Having eaten this fruit very recently, Momonosuke did not fully control his power and was unaware that it was possible to return to human form until Luffy told him. He will later return to his human form when Kin’emon regains consciousness.

Kaido ate the Uo Uo no Mi, Model: Seiryu, a Mythical Zoan-type Devil Fruit that allows him to transform into an oriental dragon, in the same way as Momonosuke, the main difference being that Kaido has a gigantic size in dragon form and appears to be in control of his transformations.

However, he will be unable to keep up this appearance if he sustains too many strong strikes, such as those Luffy delivered. He can growl loud enough to start lightning, too. The entire island of Onigashima was seen to be able to be lifted by Kaido, and he appears to be able to move it all the way to the Flower Capital.

Although their two Devil Fruits are basically the same, Kaido still has much better control over his Devil Fruit. Since he has the original version, despite Momonosuke deserving come credit here, we have to give this point to Kaido as well.

Do Momonosuke and Kaido have the same Devil Fruit?

This is a little addendum to our usual structure, but it is a relevant question for the series. Due to their similarities, fans keep wondering whether Momonosuke and Kaido have the same Devil Fruit, and the answer is no. And yes. No, because it is impossible for two people to share the same Devil Fruit powers, as no matter how many people eat one single Devil Fruit, its powers will only manifest in one. But, the Devil Fruit that Momonosuke consumed was an artificial Uo Uo no Mi, Model: Seiryu created by Vegapunk, i.e., the artificial version of Kaido’s original Devil Fruit, so in a way, their powers do come from the same fruit, only Kaido’s are real, while Momonosuke’s are artificial.

Haki

Kenbunshoku Haki is, as far as it is known, the only Haki that can be used by Momonosuke. He demonstrated this talent in Onigashima during the Wano Country arc when, while being a great distance away from Luffy, he could still tell how the battle against Kaido was going. As far as it is known, Momonosuke cannot use other Haki techniques.

Kaidou is among a very small number of people who can use the Haoshoku Haki. Upon colliding with Charlotte Linlin using his Kanabō, they both generated the typical lightning discharge. Kaidou can use the advanced variant of Haoshoku Haki, imbuing his Kanabō with his will, which expels black bolts violently from its end and makes them extend towards his enemies.

Kaido is able to use all three types of Haki, whereas Momonosuke is known to use just one of the three Haki types. This is why, according to tradition, we have to give this point to Kaido, as he knows more types of Haki than Momonosuke.

Weapons

Momonosuke learned basic swordsmanship from his father at a very young age. Although Momonosuke has been seen in possession of swords, he has not been seen wielding them in actual combat. Therefore, his skill level in handling them is unknown. After his return to Wano, he is seen practicing his swordsmanship on different occasions, but he still does not consider himself worthy enough to wield Ame no Habakiri.

Later, during the three days before the attack on Onigashima, Momonosuke is seen practicing and getting guidance from Zoro. Momonosuke, who was restrained by Kanjuro, was able to extricate himself from the ropes by using a knife he discovered on the ground. Even though the samurai quickly outweighed him, Momonosuke could use his knife to slice Kanjuro’s palm during the fight.

Kaidou uses his Hassaikai, a giant metal Kanabō that is full of spikes and fits his size when facing his opponents. Along with his immense physical strength, he can use it to crush his opponents and send them great distances and was able to knock Luffy unconscious with a single blow, breaking the enormous defensive power of his enhanced Busoshoku Haki with his Gear Fourth form. With it, he could also block Charlotte Linlin’s attack with Napoleon, an extremely powerful sword. Kaidou killed Kozuki Oden using a double-barreled pistol, but it is unknown what has become of this weapon today and if he still has it in his possession.

Kaido might not be the best swordsman in One Piece, but he is certainly skilled enough to be among the better ones. On the other hand, Momonosuke is one of the best swordsmen in the series, and he surpasses Kaido in this category, which is why he wins this duel.
