Frieren: Frieren’s “Fatal Vulnerability” Explained!
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is a manga and anime series currently among the most popular anime airing in 2024. Written by Kanehito Yamada and illustrated by Tsukasa Abe, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is a truly lovely fantasy series with great characters, one of which will be the focus of this article. We will discuss Frieren, the titular protagonist, a powerful Elf Mage, and the only character who connects the present to the past. Frieren is a very specific character, and while she might look fragile and weak, she is actually one of the strongest characters in the series, possibly the strongest even. And while she is difficult to defeat, she does have one “fatal vulnerability,” and we are going to tell you what it is in this article.
Frieren is possibly stronger than even Serie
Without a doubt, were it not for Serie, the title of this section would have been titled differently. Frieren is a fantastic Mage; despite her seeming weakness and clumsiness, she is actually able to conceal the full extent of her mana, which is revealed when she releases it. She is even more powerful because she is well-versed in magic and has amassed a sizable collection of different spells. The strongest demons, even the Demon King himself, were vanquished by her, which says enough about her.
The series has hinted that Serie would have been able to defeat the Demon King as well, but she lacked something that Frieren had, which is why she was not a suitable candidate. It has not been clarified whether Serie is actually stronger than Frieren or not, but Serie is officially considered to be the strongest as of the time of writing. Still, this doesn’t reduce Frieren’s status in any way, as Frieren is an opponent that you wouldn’t want to fight. Just remember her fight with the powerful Denken – the old and experienced Mage, despite all his skills and his cunning, stood absolutely no chance against Frieren, who did not even bother to push herself in this fight.
Having said all of this, we can now continue with the topic at hand.
Her “fatal vulnerability” is quite hilarious
When the examinees of Sense’s part of the First-Class Mage Exam encountered Frieren’s clone in the Ruins of the King’s Tomb, they retreated. Created by Spiegel, the clone was a Perfect Replica of Frieren and thus had all of her powers as well. This means that there was seemingly no way of defeating her. When Frieren and Fern came to the location, they seemingly acknowledged that the clone could not be defeated, but then Fern confirmed that she knew Frieren’s “fatal vulnerability” and that she would be able to kill her.
Fern demonstrated the vulnerability as follows: she puts Frieren next to a wall and attacks her with a spell, with Frieren defending herself. And while Kanne and Lawine noticed nothing, Denken and Methode noticed that Frieren’s mana detection is interrupted for a fraction of a second the instant a spell is cast. Laufen described it as a beginner’s mistake, and Frieren confirmed that she had had problems with it for ages but that it was too embarrassing, so she decided not to say anything; this got on Fern’s nerves, but they soon decided to move on with the strategy meeting, as Frieren’s clone had to be defeated.
And while the other Mages commented that Frieren was so skilled – generally – that no one would really be able to exploit that vulnerability, Fern and Frieren knew that the two of them could do it against the clone, so they went and faced it together. It was a tough match, but as you might assume, the two of them won by exploiting exactly what they had been talking about. That is, as far as we know, Frieren’s only vulnerability, and it is truly hilarious since such a powerful mage has such a silly weakness.
