Undead Unluck: All 11 Permanent Deaths in the Series

Undead Unluck is a manga series written and illustrated by Yoshifumi Tozuka, which has been ongoing since January 20, 2020, and has now been collected in 18 volumes as of the time of writing. The story is a supernatural adventure filled with humor, so you can imagine the series will be filled with ridiculous powers and abilities. In light of that, you can imagine that death is also a very ridiculous concept in the series, and with the Loops in place, the characters in Undead Unluck don’t really die in the traditional sense (and we’re not referring to Andy’s situation, which is specific even in terms of the show). Every character that dies is reborn in the next Loop… well, almost everyone. The UMAs are an exception and some human characters are dead. This is what we are going to talk about in this article.
Now, as we have said, what we are going to do in this article is provide you with a list of all the permanent deaths that occurred in the Undead Unluck manga and anime. We are going to list the major characters who have died so far (both on- and off-screen) and explain what happened to them in the series and how exactly they died. The article will only focus on those deaths that have occurred in the manga so far, so we’ll regularly update the article with new information as they arrive.
Editor’s Note: This article is regularly updated with each new chapter, as more characters are confirmed to have died. The last update was on March 8, 2024.
1. Andy’s Crew was killed off by bandits
Going back to the past, we actually arrived in the United States during the Reconstruction Era. This was a very interesting period, of course, but it is even more interesting because it is somehow connected to Andy’s past. As Fuuko was exploring that segment, she found a younger Andy – he had his hair down and wore an eyepatch – with a crew of his own. All the members were very interesting personalities and it is a true shame that we did not see more of them.
Aside from Andy, who was known as The Captain, the crew consisted of Josh, Sanders, Red, Ash, and Camus. We probably would have seen more of them, but while they were eating and drinking in a bar in Longing, a group of bandits entered and started shooting at the people inside, killing all the crew members, with Fuuko being the only survivor. The implications weren’t that grave because it was a past scene, but it is how it went down.
2. UMA Autumn was killed thanks to a joint effort
One of the more bizarre embodiments of the four seasons, UMA Autumn was a formidable foe and a truly scary character. It was one of Apocalypse’s tasks, which included the capture of the four UMA that embodies the four seasons. UMA Autumn was the first one on that list.
UMA Autumn’s story was somewhat specific, and while it had an arc of its own, many other things happened there. Ultimately, while Andy was in his book form, UMA Autumn started approaching them, forcing Union and Under to cooperate, especially in light of the fact that UMA Autumn had succeeded in reaching its Second Phase. But Akira used his G-Liner to recreate the Life is Strange Artifact, which ages up Rip so he can help Unrepair. Thanks to this joint effort, the Negators were able to defeat UMA Autumn.
3. UMA Summer was killed by Tatiana’s Untouchable
UMA Summer was yet another monstrosity that appeared in the series and turned out to be a formidable opponent in more ways than one. It was also part of Apocalypse’s assignment, so the Negators had to track it down and kill it, but it was not an easy task by all means.
Namely, as Apocalypse revealed, the Negators have never been able to defeat Summer in its Second Phase, but there was a way to do it. Mui accidentally activated Untruth, forcing Apocalypse to reveal that Summer can only be killed by destroying all of its segments at once. During the fight, Shen and Mui used the Nyoi-Kinko Staff and forced it down Summer’s throat, which forced the UMA to bend. After that, Tatiana came to the and used her ability, Untouchable, which effectively destroyed all parts of Summer at the same time, killing the UMA.
4. UMA Winter was conveniently killed by UMA Burn
As far as the penultimate season-related UMA is concerned, UMA Winter suddenly became a very important enemy once UMA Summer was defeated. Namely, after Summer’s death, the world suddenly started to freeze over. This made sense, since now that Summer had been gone, there was nothing to balance out the climate in the world, so the freezing powers of UMA Winter suddenly became very important. This also meant that the Negators had to take care of UMA Winter.
Under and Union clashed over how to approach the fight against UMA Winter, but once Fuuko agreed to cooperate with Under, they all agreed that the best way was to have UMA Burn, an ally of Billy’s, kill it, and that is exactly what happened and how UMA Winter was killed, with the climate being balanced out once more.
5. UMA Spring died after a thrilling three-round fight with Fuuko
UMA Spring was by far the most interesting of all the four seasonal UMAs. It had a humanoid appearance and housed itself on top of Tokyo Tower. Due to her ability, Fuuko was determined to be the ideal candidate to fight against UMA Spring, which is why she was sent to face and defeat it.
Spring was able to achieve the Third Phase, and he warned Fuuko to stay away in case he entered this berserk mode. Since Fuuko was there to kill it, UMA Spring agreed to a three-round fight against her to determine the winner, with the two staking their lives. UMA Spring managed to win round one, while Fuuko won rounds two and three, despite Sun’s intervention. After losing the final found, Spring recited one last haiku and died nobly, having been defeated by Fuuko.
6. Isshin the 12th seemingly died of old age sometime before 2015
Best known as Haruka Yamaoka’s grandfather, Isshin the 12th was an interesting character and the original holder of the Unbreakable ability. He is one of the rare human deaths on this list, but his fate in the 100th Loop was confirmed and he is officially listed as a deceased character on the Undead Unluck Wikia.
He had an interesting story and was a very protective character, but he was also an old character and was a character from the history of the series. Not much of his story was revealed, but he was a well-respected character in the series. His fate was for a long time unknown, but it was later revealed in the series that he had died of old age, sometime before 2015. His tombstone was also seen in the series, confirming that he had, in fact, died some time ago.
7. Tesshu Isshin is another member of the family who died, but the circumstances are not really known
Tessu Isshin is referred to as “The First” by his descendants, so we can deduce that he was the first member of the Isshin clan to hold the Unbreakable ability, which means that he is also a character from the past. And yes, he was both a blacksmith and a Negator who held the Unbreakable ability.
Sadly, not much is known about him or his story, as the series has been scarce in providing information about him, but he is nevertheless an interesting character, and since he has been confirmed as a deceased one, we had to list him here. But, sadly, we cannot provide you with more details simply because the series still hasn’t revealed all the details that we would certainly want to know about Tessu Isshin and his fate.
8. The circumstances of UMA Magma’s death are unknown
The three UMAs we are going to talk about, starting with Magma, appeared during the Ragnarok Arc, and all of them have been revealed as Master Rules, which means that they were killed at one point during the earlier Loops of the series. Sadly, the details are scarce on each of them, just like it was the case with some other characters.
Magna gathered in Ruin’s castle and worked with Gravity to kill the Negators, attacking Andy and Fuuko. Andy used Fuuko’s Unluck to save them from the falling debris and then observed that all of that had been caused by Magma, which somewhat surprised him, as he knew he had killed Magma sometime ago. Sadly, this is all we know about the circumstances of UMA Magma’s death as the series did not reveal any additional information about what happened.
9. The same can be said about UMA Slice, who also became a Master Rule
Everything we’ve said about UMA Magma above can also be said about UMA Slice here. Sadly, we don’t have any information on this UMA history, but we do know that it does embody the act of slicing, so you can assume that it was both dangerous and lethal. Especially since it was a proper monstrosity.
It seems that UMA Slice also became a Master Rule, which means that it has been killed at some point in the past, although we don’t really have any details for you at this point. What we do know is that it debuted during the Ragnarok Arc and that it fought against the Negators in that part of the story. As said, we’re sad to say this, but there is nothing more that we can add here to expand this story at this moment. Maybe more information will be revealed later in the series.
10. UMA Gravity seems to be the most tricky one, but it, too, has been killed
As far as UMA Gravity is concerned, it actually makes sense that this guy became a Master Rule since no one was floating on Earth in the series. Gravity, thus, does exist. But that does not matter now. Gravity is one of the Master Rules, and it has been implied in the series that it had been killed at one point in the past, but we don’t really have any details for you at this point.
UMA Gravity did appear along the other UMAs in the Ragnarok Arc and it attacked the Negators, assisting primarily Magma. It had a very condescending and patronizing attitude towards the humans, belittling them during the fight. And that is more or less it; sadly, there’s not much we can tell you in addition to this, but we are hoping that the series provides us with more information later.
11. Kenji Yokezu passed away, seemingly from old age
The final name on this list as of now is Kenji Yokezu, a seemingly unimportant side character. He was an old man who was introduced as someone who liked to play the lottery very much. He was very old, so the characters were more or less certain that he would soon pass away. Why was this important? Well, he was actually the owner of the Unavoidable ability before it was passed down to Void, which explains his connection to the main characters.
He always won the lottery, and the Negators were aware that he was the owner of the Unavoidable ability. This meant that they had to wait for his death to recruit Void, and it was – at one point – confirmed that he had passed away, most likely due to old age.
