Jujutsu Kaisen: Will Gojo Come Back to Life? Here’s 15 Reasons Why He Might!
Chapter 236 of Jujutsu Kaisen caused an uproar online as it apparently showed us the death of Satoru Gojo at the hands of Sukuna. This was a shock after Chapter 235 ended with the words, “Gojo won.” The chapter showed us Gojo in the afterlife, and then Sukuna explained how he managed to cut him in half as a new fighter prepared to take over the fight. And with that, Satoru Gojo is seemingly dead.
Now, we have to say that even Gojo might have a hard time recovering from this type of injury and that everything points to him being dead or at least absent for a while (again). And while we cannot confirm anything at this point, it seems that Gojo is dead at the time. But, it is not set in stone, not yet at least, and there are numerous reasons (as well as actual hints) that point to another miracle in the upcoming chapters of this article, we are going to list all the reasons, both stronger and weaker, why we think that Gojo might actually come back from this, even though the chances are slim. (The reasons won’t be ordered in any specific way.)
1. It doesn’t make sense plot-wise, as Gojo’s death was a major asspull that destroyed all consistency
The more we read into Chapter 236, the less sense it makes. Gojo’s death happened like it did, and when Sukuna explained it, it made absolutely no sense, which we have already written about. This was an asspull of an explanation, a Deus ex machina that completely went against everything we had seen up to that point, and it makes absolutely no sense to end this epic clash in such a way.
This would absolutely destroy the whole point of the battle; it would make Sukuna’s presumed victory basically worthless, and – referring to Gojo’s comments in the afterlife – the whole battle as well, especially since it doesn’t seem like Sukuna can be beaten now, and that means that Akutami has done something wrong because of his hatred for Gojo, and that wouldn’t make sense based on what we’ve seen up to this point in Jujutsu Kaisen, whose plot was more or less brilliant throughout.
2. Gojo’s said goodbye to his friends in the afterlife
Gojo had a heartwarming reunion with all of his deceased friends in the afterlife, which was depicted as a giant airport. While he discusses the situation with them and confirms that he has lost, in the end, he seemingly says goodbye to all of them and heads for a plane.
When Jogo and the other cursed died, they met once again in the afterlife and talked there; no one said farewell to anyone, so why would Gojo say it? Why would Gojo say goodbye to his friends in the afterlife if he was staying with them? This seems like a solid hint at Gojo’s return.
3. Sukuna did not cut off Gojo’s head
Remember the first fight Gojo had with Toji in Gojo’s Past Arc? At one point, Toji confused his senses and mauled him so badly that there was – seemingly – no way for him to return. Toji massacred his body and left Gojo in such a state that no one could heal him. But Gojo came back.
He concentrated all his powers on healing and then used his Reversed Curse Technique to heal himself, even though the situation was as dire as possible. How could he do it? Well, he later told Toji that he should’ve cut off his head, as then, he wouldn’t be able to heal. If you observe the panels from Chapter 236, Gojo’s head is completely intact.
4. The lotuses
In the afterlife scene, while Gojo is talking to Geto, we see some lotuses as Gojo says: “You can admire a blooming flower, but you can’t ask it to understand you.” This referenced Sukuna’s and his own status in the world, as both were somewhat admired but lonely.
Now, this might be just reading into it, as the lotuses might have been just a simple author’s decision, but in Asian folklore, lotuses signify rebirth, and if Akutami wanted to send a message about Gojo’s return, this would be a truly great way to do it.
5. The North-South discussion
In the afterlife, Gojo discusses Nanami’s death with him, and Nanami says that he once asked Mei Mei about it, and she told him that if he wanted to become someone new, he should go north, but if he wanted to remain the same, he should head south. Nanami chose South and seemingly remained in the afterlife, but we don’t know what Gojo will choose, nor if this dialogue has any important symbolism.
It could be that going north means that Gojo will come back as a cursed spirit or as a wholly new entity, which would be quite interesting, as there are many possibilities here, but we simply don’t know. He could come back in his old form, in a less powerful form, in a completely new form, or the dialogue might be completely insignificant, but it does seem like a potential hint to us.
6. Gojo has already survived almost equally devastating blows
Gojo has already survived being mauled by Toji and locked inside the Prison Realm. While he was cut in half this time, the severity of the injuries inflicted on him by Toji was basically equal to him being cut in half; the injuries were simply distributed differently. This could also point to a potential miracle happening again, with “Feral Gojo” making a spectacular comeback to show a shocked Sukuna that he is the strongest one.
7. Gojo was killed off-screen
Okay, we all know the rule – if an anime character does not die on-screen, they’re probably not dead. And sure, Gojo’s cut body was seen on-screen, but the death itself happened off-screen, and that simply doesn’t make much sense, as killing off such an important character in such a way goes against all shonen traditions.
Sure, Akutami has been known for breaking tropes, but this would be such a major deviation that it wouldn’t make much sense and would seem like a bad and plot-wise inconsistent decision through which the author wanted to validate his own hatred for Gojo. While it is valid, it also ruins the story. So, the fact that Gojo was off-screened might indicate that Akutami has a surprise for us, as major anime deaths are not generally executed in such a way.
Plus, there is the fact that such deaths are often accompanied by a flashback scene, which wasn’t the case here.
8. Gojo is such an important character that he does not deserve such a death
Okay, we all know that Akutami hates Gojo, but we also know that without Gojo, neither Akutami nor his editors would have such a successful series in front of them. This means that killing Gojo, while necessary from a certain point of view, shouldn’t be executed in such a banal way. And this was truly banal.
Gojo had a scheduled duel with Kenjaku that could’ve been quite symbolic, and that was probably the way to go for him, but this was just bad, and the fact that everyone agrees that Gojo did not deserve to go out like this might mean that he actually won’t be going out like this. Plus, first sealing Gojo for a long time, then bringing him back for a dozen chapters only to kill him off instantly? That’s just cruel and bad writing.
9. Shoko Ieiri
Shoko Ieiri is the best healer in the series; she is also Gojo’s close friend and is in the vicinity, as the manga showed. In the afterlife, Gojo said something about asking Shoko to take care of something, which came right after his dad’s comment. Could this mean that Gojo predicted his defeat and asked Shoko to be ready to heal him? Or did he task her with caring for his corpse so that Kenjaku wouldn’t get his hands on it? This reference, in any case, doesn’t seem to be accidental.
10. Yuta Okkotsu
Remember Rika, Yuta’s cursed spirit from Jujutsu Kaisen 0? It turned out that Yuta cursed her and that she remained with him as a cursed spirit because of him. Could he do the same to Gojo? Possibly, but that probably wouldn’t satisfy the fans, as no one wants to see Gojo as a monster.
11. Gojo’s dad?
In the afterlife scene, Gojo mentioned a “Chichi-oya” and some “stuff” related to him. Now, this wasn’t overly clear, as it wasn’t perfectly clear to whose dad he was referring to – his own, Yuji’s, Megumi’s? This might be nothing, but we also listed it here as a potential thing that Akutami might expand upon.
12. No one else can beat Sukuna (let alone Kenjaku after that)
Gojo’s death at this point and the fact that Sukuna cannot tear through space itself leave Akutami with a big problem – Sukuna is invincible now. There is absolutely no character in the series that is, based on what we’ve seen, even close to being able to defeat Sukuna, and for a series that has taken pride in its narrative consistency and battle logic, this means problems.
The battles in Jujutsu Kaisen were always amazing, but with such an asspull victory for Sukuna that makes no logical sense, Akutami will have to do more asspulls if he wants Sukuna to be defeated, and that will completely ruin the series. And don’t forget that there’s still the issue of Kenjaku.
13. It would ruin the plot, as there is seemingly no smooth way out of this
Which brings us to our next reason. Gojo losing to Sukuna in such a way ruins the plot. Sure, Akutami could find a way around it, but it would require bending the plot and ruining the consistency, which is as bad as it sounds, and we hope that won’t happen. Sure, Gojo can die, it’s not that, but dying like this complicates stuff further, and it doesn’t seem like something the editors would approve of, as it will certainly lead to bad reviews.
14. Yuji Itadori and Megumi Fushiguro
Gojo was a mentor figure to Yuji, and losing him at this point doesn’t make sense since Yuji is nowhere near his prime powers. How will he learn more? How will he improve? It seems that if Gojo really did die now, it would prove Akutami never paid any attention to the consequences and that he did not think much ahead, which isn’t characteristic of him.
Also, there’s Megumi… did we all simply forget about Megumi? He wasn’t even addressed in this fight, and if Akutami uses him as leverage to explain Sukuna’s downfall, it would make even less sense and would ruin the whole idea.
15. Gojo’s post-mortem replies simply don’t make sense, as Gojo is the strongest character
And finally, Gojo’s post-mortem behavior doesn’t make much sense; it seemed like a wholly different Gojo. The Gojo we all knew wouldn’t really admit that Sukuna was stronger, let alone that there was no way he could defeat him, even if Sukuna had not used Megumi’s techniques.
This seems odd for a guy like Gojo, especially considering what he had said about Sukuna earlier. Plus, could Gojo simply sacrifice himself like this without having a backup plan for his students and those he cared about? Yeah, it seems very uncharacteristic for Gojo.
***
And if you add all of these reasons together, there is reason to believe that Gojo might actually come back to life; Chapter 236 doesn’t make much sense unless Akutami will either surprise us again or he simply decides to do a suicide routine and destroy the whole plot because the only reason of this was to kill Gojo, regardless of how that death – in such a manner – makes absolutely no sense.
We’ll see what happens in the upcoming chapters, but we hope that whatever Akutami decides to do will do justice to this great series and not leave it in a state in which every fan will hate it for ruining itself to the core.
