Did Gungi Survive Order 66, and What Happened to Him?

Share:

The entire world of Star Wars is one that’s full of different alien species that have their own representatives in the Jedi Order. Of course, that’s because anyone can be Force-sensitive, including the Wookiees, who are alien races that aren’t exactly the most Jedi-like in terms of their appearance. Nevertheless, we did meet Gungi in Star Wars: Clone Wars as a Wookiee that was also a Jedi Youngling. So, did Gungi Survive Order 66, and what happened to him?

As seen in the trailer of The Bad Batch season 2, Gungi is very much alive and is set to make his reappearance in the Star Wars universe in the aforementioned series. As such, he survived the events of Order 66 and went on to continue his duties as a Jedi that’s fighting the Empire.

The fact that Gungi is still alive is one of the reasons why fans are excited about season 2 of The Bad Batch, as we get to see a Jedi joining the series. Of course, the Jedi have always been the main attraction in the Star Wars universe, and adding a fan-favorite minor character like Gungi could help make the storyline of season 2 more interesting. Now, let’s look at what we know about what happened to Gungi.

Who Is Gungi In Star Wars?

While the Star Wars movies have always been the main parts of the entire Star Wars lore, the series served to fill holes left in the events of Star Wars. Of course, the most popular Star Wars series before and during the acquisition of Disney was Star Wars: Clone Wars, which chronicled the entire Clone Wars event that happened in between Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones and Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.

The reason why Clone Wars is so popular is the fact that it didn’t focus only on Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Instead, it allowed secondary and tertiary characters to shine as well. That’s why the storylines of the other Jedi and some of the other players during the Clone Wars were told during the events of this series. And it was during this series that young Jedi were introduced.

Of course, we know for a fact that any kind of alien race or species could be a Jedi as long as the person is sensitive to the Force. While the first Wookiee we have ever met in the Star Wars lore was a rebellious gunslinging smuggler that acted as the partner of Han Solo, Chewbacca was never the only Wookiee in the galaxy. That’s because we actually met a Jedi Youngling Wookiee in the form of Gungi during the events of Star Wars: Clone Wars.

From the moment he was introduced, Gungi became a fan-favorite character because of his sunny disposition and his smiling face, which is something that we don’t see in Chewbacca. Of course, Gungi stood out in the storyline where he was introduced because he was literally the largest in his Jedi Youngling group.

Gungi was introduced as a member of a Jedi Youngling group that was deemed to be the best of their class. He and his group traveled to the planet called Ilum so that they could participate in the Gathering, which is an ancient Jedi ritual that involved allowing them to gather their own Kyber crystals. The group was accompanied by Jedi Master Yoda and Jedi Padawan Ahsoka Tano.

After they had acquired their Kyber crystals, Gungi and the other Jedi Younglings were on a ship while they were constructing their lightsabers. However, they came under attack by Hondo Ohnaka, who captured Ahsoka Tano. As such, the Younglings were instrumental in rescuing the Jedi Padawan from the famous pirate.

Soon after that, the Jedi and the pirates worked together in a battle against General Grievous, as Gungi and the other Younglings worked together to fight the fearsome cyborg. He survived that encounter and eventually became a Jedi Padawan.

Did Gungi Survive The Events Of Order 66?

After Gungi had become a Jedi Padawan, things went south for the Jedi because that was when Order 66 was initiated. As such, the Jedi Temple was attacked by Anakin and the clones. Meanwhile, all of the other Jedi throughout the galaxy were killed by the clones that they were working with. Considering that Gungi was already a Padawan at this time, he was no longer in the temple in Coruscant and was probably working together with a Jedi Knight or Master. So, did Gungi survive the events of Order 66?

Gungi can be seen in the most recent trailer for season 2 of The Bad Batch, which is a series that takes place just after the events of Order 66. As such, it is obvious that Gungi did indeed survive the events of Order 66 and went on to continue his life as a Jedi Padawan that quite possibly fought against the Imperial forces during the early part of the Empire’s reign.

It is clear in the season 2 trailer that Gungi will be one of the characters that will appear in the series. Of course, Disney+ has doubled down on the different Star Wars characters that appeared in the animated format of Lucasfilm’s side of the fictional world. After all, we did see Master Yaddle’s fate in the events of Tales of the Jedi after she was obviously absent during the events after Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace.

In that regard, it is clear that the people behind Lucasfilm are now looking to fill in more holes by allowing us to see what happened to secondary and tertiary characters in the Star Wars galaxy, particularly the Jedi that may have survived the events of Order 66. And we know that there were quite a number of survivors because we’ve already seen a few of them in the different Star Wars storylines.

What Happened To Gungi?

At this point, we aren’t sure what happened to Gungi during the events of Order 66, but it is clear that he was not in the Jedi Temple because he was no longer a Youngling. As such, it is possible that he was sent to work with a Jedi Knight or Master during the final parts of the Clone Wars. That means that he was able to survive the events of Order 66, probably due to the efforts of the Jedi he was sent to work with.

Of course, as we all know, Commander Cody is set to make an appearance in The Bad Batch season 2, and that means that there is a good chance that his story is somehow intertwined with Gungi’s own story. That’s because we know that Cody took part in the Empire’s enslavement of the Wookiees of Kashyyyk.

Considering that Gungi is a Wookiee, there’s a good chance that season 2 of The Bad Batch will show the events surrounding the Empire’s attack on Kashyyyk and the Wookiees. It is possible that Gungi and Commander Cody will be in the middle of these events due to how their own stories are related to Kashyyyk. Of course, the Bad Batch will somehow find a way to involve themselves in this series of events.
