Both Sukuna and Megumi are two characters we have written about a lot here on Fiction Horizon. Although we have written about them together as well, it is not enough, as the relationship between Megumi and Sukuna has become one of the most important plot elements in the recent chapters of the manga. In the aftermath of Gojo’s apparent death, Sukuna’s evolution became even more prominent, and that prompted us to tell you whether Sukuna actually killed Megumi in Chapter 237 of the Jujutsu Kaisen manga.

Officially, Megumi is still alive somewhere as Sukuna’s vessel, which means that he did not officially kill him in Chapter 237 of the manga. Now, Sukuna has activated Incarnation, and he has restored his original cursed spirit body, which means that Megumi is in such a weak state that he cannot fight against Sukuna, and with Sukuna’s Incarnation working only once, Akutami will have to come up with a very intriguing way of saving Megumi’s life if Sukuna ends up being defeated, as Incarnation doesn’t seem to be reversible. But, as stated, Megumi Fushiguro is officially still alive, but we’ll have to see what happens to him in the future.

The rest of this article is going to focus on two things. One aspect concerns the events we have talked about in our summary that happened during the Culling Game, while the other concerns the relationship between Megumi Fushigoro and Sukuna, as it is quite important to understand why Sukuna was so obsessed with the young sorcerer, i.e., why he opted to use him as a vessel and what all of that means for Megumi in light of the recent manga events. The article will contain many spoilers, so we must warn you before you start reading.

As of the time of writing, Megumi is still alive, but…

Sukuna and Megumi don’t need any particular introduction. Sukuna is the principal villain of the series alongside Kenjaku and is said to be the strongest character in the series now that he has defeated Satoru Gojo. He is an ancient sorcerer who, after his defeat, became a powerful curse. He was initially in Yuji’s body, but he then took Megumi as a vessel.

Meanwhile, Megumi is a classmate of Yuji’s and one of the series’ protagonists. His Ten Shadows Technique is exceptionally powerful, as is he, which is why Sukuna targeted him. His father was Toji Fushiguro, whom Gojo killed, and Gojo later became his mentor; he has one step-sister he looks out for, although she is older than him. Due to the tragedies he has experienced, he became unstable, and Sukuna used this fact – as a weak Megumi is more a vessel than a cage, like Itadori – to take over his body.

How did he do it? Well, it was the time of the Culling Game. Megumi and Itadori searched for Hana Kurusu, whose special abilities were said to be able to free Gojo from the Prison Realm. Hana agreed, but her symbiotic partner, Angel, informed them that they would only carry it out after Sukuna was vanquished.

Then they carry out their plan and enlist Megumi’s sister, Tsumiki Fushiguro, who turns out to be possessed by a strong sorcerer named Yorozu, shocking even Megumi. Sukuna implemented his own strategy as Yorozu continued to combat him, and while he did take a chance with it, it ultimately worked in his favor. What transpired, then?

As Yorozu prepared to battle the strong Cursed Spirit, he activated a Binding Vow and assumed control over Itadori’s body. Sukuna chose to risk it all by tearing off one of Itadori’s own fingers while being constrained in what he could do by the terms of the Vow. It turned out that the risk paid off since Itadori never included himself on the list of persons Sukuna could not damage, which is consistent with Itadori’s mentality. However, it was a very dumb error because it allowed Sukuna to devise a terrible scheme.

There was no time for Megumi to step in, so Sukuna quickly grabbed him and gave him the finger. And just as his consciousness was absorbed into Itadori when the latter ate his finger, Sukuna’s consciousness was absorbed into Megumi once more, and his dreadful goal was realized. Due to the tragedies that struck Megumi, including the death of his sister as Sukuna killed Yorozu, his spirit was broken, and Sukuna used that to make Megumi into a proper vessel; earlier, he was powerful enough to be a cage for Sukuna, so the cursed spirit had to take care of his spirit first.

Taking over the body was quite easy for him when he did that. Ultimately, he fought and defeated Gojo in that body and has now used the Incarnation. This special technique allowed him to manifest his cursed spirit form and completely heal himself, making him an even tougher opponent.

Now, what does that mean for Megumi’s fate? We assume that Megumi is still alive, as Akutami never implied otherwise. Still, with the fact that Incarnation is a one-time thing, i.e., that Sukuna can use it only once and that this means that he will either win or die in this form, Megumi’s future is up in the air. His current status is similar to Nobara’s.

In the next section, we shall explore some of the ways that Sukuna could kill Megumi, although we can only repeat that Megumi is still alive at the time of writing.

How could Sukuna kill Megumi?

Now that we have gone over the whole story, here is a list of some ways that Sukuna could actually kill Megumi in the series:

  1. Sukuna dies – seeing how Sukuna has activated Incarnation, which seems to be a one-of-a-kind thing. If he somehow dies in his incarnated form, there is a good chance that his body will die with him and that Megumi will also be killed.
  2. Megumi is already dead – there is a slim possibility that Incarnation, seeing how powerful it is, has already killed Megumi. We have discussed that, and the chances are slim, but we cannot rule anything out, seeing how Akutami has decided to evolve the plot.
  3. Sukuna could do the same thing he did to Itadori – remember when Sukuna took over Yuji’s body and then ripped his heart out? Yuji was effectively dead at the time, but his “corpse” was alive because Sukuna was in charge of the body, an Sukuna did not need Yuji’s heart to live. When Sukuna vanquished his control over the body, Yuji died. There is a possibility that he could do the same to Megumi.
  4. Sukuna is killed – similar to number one, if Sukuna gets killed while he is in his incarnated state, there is a slim chance that Megumi will also be killed since the two of them are connected.
  5. Sukuna drains Megumi to death – we know that Megumi also had the initial potential to be a cage. Still, he was ultimately traumatized enough to become so weak that he became a vessel rather than a cage, like Itadori. Sukuna can also use Megumi’s energy; it could easily kill him if he ever needs to drain it all.
  6. Deus ex machina (Asspull) – seeing how Akutami has written the recent chapters, the possibility of him doing a miracle at this point doesn’t seem likely, but it cannot be disregarded. We cannot even guess what the miracle could be, but we cannot exclude the possibility that Megumi could die because of that.
