Jujutsu Kaisen: Why Is Yūji Itadori So Strong?
Jujutsu Kaisen is a series where the supporting character Satoru Gojō is so beloved that most people think the whole series is about him. But it is not. Namely, Jujutsu Kaisen tells the story of Yūji Itadori, the unlikely protagonist and a vessel for the extremely powerful Ryōmen Sukuna. And while most people want Itadori to consume as many of Sukuna’s fingers as possible and then die, Gojō protects him. Now, Itadori’s story has been an interesting one, and with the recent manga developments, it is promising to become even more interesting in the future. In light of that fact, we will talk about him in this article, as you will find out why Itadori is so strong, despite all of his shortcomings.
And while he is not naturally talented, Yūji Itadori has a natural talent for growth, and he is also a quick learner, which is why his mentors were able to teach him how to control and use his Cursed Energy. Also, due to his contact with Sukuna (whose vessel he was for a time), Itadori was able to pick up fragments of Sukuna’s power, which improved his abilities and made him a lot stronger than he would have been naturally.
As you might have deduced for yourselves, Yūji Itadori will be the focus of this article as we expand on the answer we have given above. We shall tell you everything you need to know about his powers and abilities, as well as how it is related to Itadori’s story and his status in the world of Jujutsu Kaisen. In case you’re not up-to-date with everything that has been going on in this great series, we have to warn you that some spoilers might be present in this article.
Yūji Itadori was not the weakest character in the series, but he was also not the strongest either
Yūji Itadori is a Jujutsu Sorcerer awaiting promotion and a first-year Tokyo Metropolitan Magic Technical College student. He is famous for his exceptional physical abilities, which earned him the nickname “High School Tiger” during his days as a student at Sugisawa Municipal High School. As a vessel, he has an extremely rare ability to contain Sukuna’s soul without ill effects. These natural abilities allow him to see curses and damage soul modifiers.
Yūji is incapable of using any kind of cursed technique since he was not born with the innate talent for it. There is evidence that he could use shikigami or screens if he is trained in their use. Yūji can serve as a vessel, so despite his lack of innate ability, he is able to manipulate cursed energy since said ability comes from having ingested the fingers of the special grade curse, Sukuna, and he usually uses that power to reinforce his blows, increasing their impact.
According to Satoru Gojō, in the future, the techniques used by Sukuna could become part of Itadori, and he would become capable of using them. It has been revealed that if Yūji were to ingest one of the Nine Cursed Wombs, there would be two possibilities, either Sukuna in his current state would become a cursed womb, or the consciousness of the Nine Wombs would disappear and they would become Yūji’s cursed energy since Sukuna would finish them off.
Yūji is a talented fighter who can utilize discretion and land-crushing blows. Yūji can perform a finely tuned attack, which includes changing the power in his fist and ending his attack just before it connects. Yūji is an accomplished martial artist who is a master of Taido. Despite lacking any formal training, Yūji can swiftly grasp a weapon thanks to his strength and knowledge. It should be noted, though, that given his lack of skill, he finds it challenging to direct Cursed Energy into a weapon.
He possesses such incredible speed that, during his days as a student at Sugisawa Municipal High School, he was known for his ability to take him only three seconds to run a full 50-meter track. Likewise, he can escape at high speed from the range of his opponents without much effort, and even, he can do it while carrying things or people with him. He can also move around the entire battlefield to use it to his advantage and run while performing multiple exorcisms at once.
On the other hand, when the Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical College students tried to assassinate him, he realized the situation quickly. Thanks to his speed and good reflexes, he could avoid simultaneous attacks by five Sorcerers. On several occasions, his reflexes and speed have allowed him to maneuver around the countryside around him, and he can react instantly to survive.
On top of everything, Itadori is naturally curious, often thinking of new things to ask his teachers. Simple lessons are easy for him to comprehend, but he typically takes his time with the harder ones to pick them up quickly. He is highly adept at moving forward because of his long attention span. He was able to finish the first level of Satoru Gojō’s movie-watching training in a matter of hours, and even after learning from Aoi Todo, he continued to advance quickly and level up his strength and cursed energy utilization.
He has enormous potential, which allowed him to become exceptionally strong, even without Sukuna
Now, having explained his powers and abilities, we can actually go on to analyze why Itadori is so powerful. Namely, we have come to learn that Itadori did not have a natural talent for manipulating Cursed Energy, like, for example, Yūta and Gojō did. But he had an innate ability to use it and recognize it, which is why he is such an important character.
Of course, had he not consumed Sukuna’s fingers, he probably wouldn’t have arrived where he is now, but Itadori doesn’t really owe everything to Sukuna. Sure, Sukuna provided a proper boost for him to become a Jujutsu Sorcerer and unlock his powers, but he was not a source of his powers and abilities; we cannot state that, as the situation is not straightforward.
Namely, Itadori had a natural talent for manipulating cursed energy, but as he had not need for it, it was dormant most of his life. At one point, though, it became active thanks to him consuming Sukuna’s fingers. Some of you might argue that he received his powers from Sukuna, but we wouldn’t actually phrase it like that – we think that Itadori received his powers thanks to Sukuna, but not from Sukuna.
Itadori had a natural talent for this, but it was dormant, and thanks to Sukuna, it became active. This is also reflected in the fact that Itadori’s own powers are completely separate from Sukuna’s, meaning that Itadori actually cannot use Sukuna’s powers and abilities; they are two entities in one body, but their powers and abilities are wholly different, and Sukuna needs to take over the body from Itadori for his powers to appear.
The fact that Itadori can resist Sukuna, the most powerful cursed spirit in history, is another proof of Itadori’s strength. Sure, Sukuna is not at the height of his powers, but we have to say two things here. First of all, Itadori could fight off Sukuna’s influence while he had absolutely no powers of his own and when he wasn’t even aware of his Jujutsu skills; this shows how much mental fortitude he had.
Secondly, even Sukuna himself recognized Itadori’s power. He was shocked to find out that the boy is able to resist him, but he acknowledged it ultimately, and that is why he was looking for a way out of Itadori’s body; he was aware that while he was inside his body, he would never be able to take full control of it, meaning that he would never be able to resurrect himself.
The last thing that has made Itadori so powerful is his natural curiosity. He is an exceptionally curious person, and he definitely wants to learn new things; he is also willing to put in a lot of effort to learn stuff, as he did when he trained with the doll in the beginning. He is also a very quick learner, and that fact, combined with his natural talent and his mental fortitude, is what has made Itadori so powerful, even though Sukuna is not with him anymore and he was not able to use Sukuna’s powers and abilities by himself.
We have explained all of this to you now, and you now know how and why Itadori became so powerful and how he has managed to become one of the series’ best and most important characters.
