1. Avatar: The Last Airbender
Even though Avatar: The Last Airbender is a very controversial TV show in the anime community, some call it an anime while others strongly disagree. Nevertheless, it’s so much of a top show that I believe it deserves to be on this list. That said, this has to be one of the best animes ever, no arguments about this one. If you’ve not seen this one, you’re missing out.
It is hard to conclude which other anime have achieved the feats Avatar: The Last Airbender boasts of. It has a collection of at least nine awards and a rating of 9 out of 10. Incredible right? Yeah, I know!
This breathtaking anime series is based on an ancient civilization comprising four nations emphasized by four elements; Water, Earth, Fire, and Air. Also, each nation has within it certain gifted people that can manipulate their nation’s signature elements. They are called Benders.
Thus the Water nation was divided into a Northern and Southern Water Tribe that had Water benders that could manipulate water. Also, the Earth kingdom had earth benders, the Fire nation had fire benders and the Air nomads could bend air.
Only the Avatar had the innate ability to master and bend all four elements. Note that they usually come from one of the four nations every generation following the cycle of Fire, Air, Water, and Earth.
The responsibility of the Avatar was to maintain peace between the four nations. Also, they had to serve as the link between the spirits and man. However, this Avatar was a 12 years old Airbender called Aang. He was now burdened by the seemingly overwhelming responsibility he would be taking and the pieces of training he was doing, he fled his home on his bison.
However, he got caught in a storm, and so he encased himself and the bison. As the storm raged, he got trapped in an iceberg and went into a trance for 100 years.
Now, as the ruthless Fire Nation, led by the then Fire Lord Sozin, sought to conquer the three other nations, he began his conquest by wiping out the Air nomads because he knew the Avatar was to come from there.
The conquest was largely successful because a comet aided the fire nation, making their benders more potent than usual. Only the Earth Kingdom of Ba Sing Se resisted.
100 year later, Katara and her older brother Sokka from the Southern Water Tribe stumbled into the Avatar Aang and woke him up from his trance.
After being enlightened about the events in his absence, he would begin his long, daunting task. At this point, He had to free the other three nations from the Fire Nations’ tyranny with the help of Katara, Sokka, Toph, and Zuko.
